Named
for the cool Pacific Ocean winds that breeze through the Templeton Gap in the
Santa Lucia Mountain chain, Windward Vineyard Pinot Noir is testimony to the unique
microclimate of the area.
To make the "Great American Pinot Noir," one that rivals those produced in Burgundy,
is the passion of Windward Vineyard owners Marc Goldberg and Maggie D'Ambrosia.
Windward Vineyard is a small family winery dedicated exclusively to the growth
and production of estate bottled Burgundian-style Pinot Noir.
Owners Marc and Maggie are convinced that the site's rocky limestone, sloping
well-drained soil and microclimate of the west side of the Paso Robles appellation
had all the elements required to produce exceptional Pinot Noir. With the Burgundian,
"Monopole" vision of total control over both the vineyard and the winemaking,
the 15-acre vineyard is planted to four outstanding French clones.
Marc and Maggie strive to put Paso Robles' Pinot Noir back on the map, following
in the footsteps of two notable figures in California wine history. In the late
1960's, consultant Andre Tchelistcheff supervised the Paso Robles Hoffman Mountain
Ranch property of Dr. Stanley Hoffman. In the 1970's, Hoffman's Pinot Noirs gained
worldwide recognition, and are still drinking well today, over 20 years later.
Since the 1993 debut, each of Windward's SOLD OUT vintages have achieved inspiring
acclaim, particularly within the community of wine afficionados who appreciate
the layerd complexity of Burgundian styled Pinot Noir. Marc explains. "We knew
we could count on the vineyard to produce formidable fruit. It is living up to
our expectations as it matures and continues to develop layered complexity."
