The history of Wild Horse Winery & Vineyards is synonymous with that of Ken Volk and his family. While pursuing a Fruit Science degree at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, Ken's focus on citrus and avocados quickly turned to wine grapes. "It was the realization of being able to take a highly-perishable fruit and produce something delicious and complex which, in theory, improve with age that fueled my fascination with wine," explains Ken.

Following successful vintages of homemade wine, Ken was hired on at neighboring Edna Valley Vineyard to work the 1981 crush. The following year he convinced his family to back plans for developing a vineyard. He began to scour the Central Coast for an ideal location, searching as far south as Santa Barbara and as far south as Santa Cruz. Ken eventually staked his claim in Templeton, and began planting the Wild Horse estate vineyards in 1982. By the following year, Wild Horse Winery & Vineyards was launched with the production of Pinot Noir from Santa Maria's Sierra Madre Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles.

March 23, 1986 was a very auspicious date for both Ken and his fledgling winery. It marked the release date of the first Wild Horse wines - 125 cases of Pinot Noir and 450 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon - as well as his marriage to chef and cooking instructor, Tricia Tartaglione.

Celebrating over 17 years of winemaking, Wild Horse's total case production is presently near 100,000 cases. Our wines are enjoyed in all 50 states and throughout the world.
