Just six miles west of Paso Robles, California is Peachy Canyon Winery, home of Doug and Nancy Beckett and their sons, Josh and Jake. The Beckett family has been handcrafting some of California's most noteworthy Zinfandels and Cabernets since establishing their winery in 1988. Peachy Canyon has earned accolades and a well-deserved reputation for its consistently big, polished Zinfandels.

The original Peachy Canyon Winery building was completed in 1987 and opened in 1988. It was originally designed to house the Tobias project initiated by Doug and his then partner, Pat Wheeler, a full-time tool-and-dye maker. The Tobias Vineyards produced a hearty Zinfandel from the Benito Dusi Ranch and had a cult following among local aficionados. When the partnership dissolved, Doug and Nancy decided to create their own name rather than retaining the Tobias label.

A 1988 Zinfandel from Benito Dusi Vineyards was the first harvest of grapes crushed for the Peachy Canyon label. Doug says he started with the Zinfandel grape because of its long history for quality fruit and the availability from top vineyards in the area. For three years it was the only wine he made and the first vines he planted. The first estate-grown Zinfandel is from the 1992 harvest.

Peachy Canyon has been growing by leaps and bounds. We outgrew our facility on the hill in Peachy Canyon, Purchased a 20 year old winery with surrounding vineyards on Nacimiento Lake Dr. in Paso Robles and will continue making our quality wines. The Becketts now own 40 acres of Zinfandel, 15 acres of Chardonnay, 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 acre of Sangiovese, 2 acres of Barberra, and 2 acres Petit Serrah. The production figures have climbed steadily from 500 cases in 1990 to Peachy Canyon's current production of 30,000 cases annually.

Doug is credited with developing the concept of "Westside" & "Eastside" Zinfandel, (that is grapes produced west and east of the Salinas River), as there is a distinct difference in soil, climate, rainfall and historical data from both areas. He feels that much of his success is due to the great Paso Robles fruit he has to work with. "Through blending different vineyard lots, I am able to develop a consistent style of wine year after year."

The fruit is evident in each vintage, and by releasing Peachy Canyon wines at the "peak of their youth," Doug feels he gives the consumer the opportunity to enjoy a young wine at its most vibrant state or hold on to it for several years for a more mellow style.
