From a young age working on the family farm I couldn't help but notice how variations in climate from year to year and soils in different areas affected fruit quality. As the Research Enologist for Mondavi and later the Head Enologist at Opus One, consulting in California and in South America I have had the good fortune to work with a wide range of grape varieties in various climates expanding my palette and experience.

1998 Paul Hobbs Chardonnay Russian River Valley. Straw gold color; roasted hazelnut and apple aromas. Considerable richness and texture on the mid-palate, with an underlying mineral complexity. The wine is immensely appealing to drink now, but the elegance and balance indicate several years of cellaring might yield additional nuances. Alcohol 14.4%

1997 Paul Hobbs Chardonnay Cuvee Agustina. With my first child Agustina Lindsay in mind, my hope is to make a wine that honors the magnificence of nature's concert with man. The Dinner Vineyard, perched high on the eastern flank of Sonoma Mountain, produces grapes that match these expectations. The resulting wine has a bouquet of honeyed apples and citrus, that displays rich fruit on the palate. The excellent structure promises years of enjoyable drinking. Alcohol 14.3%.

1996 Hyde Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep black garnet color; generous aromas of ripe cherries, chocolate truffles, sweet nutmeg and sage; intense fruit flavors, blackcurrants, red-fleshed plums mingle with exotic spices, black olive and a hint of tobacco. Full-bodied, luxurious on the mid-palate; the finish is elegant and powerful. This wine complements various preparations of lamb and grilled meats as well as cheese and pasta. Alcohol 13.2%.
