Established in 1858 by Jacob Gundlach
and Emil Dresel, J. Gundlach and Co. produced premium Bacchus Table Wines from
Rhinefarm grapes. By 1864 the winery was growing rapidly, and Gundlach looked
to his son-in-law, Charles Bundschu for help with marketing and administration.
The wine company continued to grown and by the mid-1870's annual production reached
150,000. Gundlach Bundschu Wine Company prospered handsomely through the turn
of the century, however, all this changed when the 1906 San Francisco earthquake
