At the southernmost end of the Sonoma Valley the 400 acre Rhinefarm Vineyards is home to one of the oldest and most respected wineries in California, Gundlach Bundschu.


Yesterday...
Established in 1858 by Jacob Gundlach and Emil Dresel, J. Gundlach and Co. produced premium Bacchus Table Wines from Rhinefarm grapes. By 1864 the winery was growing rapidly, and Gundlach looked to his son-in-law, Charles Bundschu for help with marketing and administration. The wine company continued to grown and by the mid-1870's annual production reached 150,000. Gundlach Bundschu Wine Company prospered handsomely through the turn of the century, however, all this changed when the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed the family's city property.

Prohibition in 1919 forced the closure of the winery, though the vineyards on Rhinefarm continued to produce premium grapes that were sold to other wineries. In 1967 the family replanted the entire ranch back to wine grapes and decided to make wine themselves. In 1973 the Gundlach Bundschu winery reopened with a 600 case production of estate Zinfandel.

Great-great-great grandsons of Jacob Gundlach, Jeff and Robbie have fully entered the wine business as the sixth generation of their family's sole proprietorship.
