of the Oakville area are so unique, the region has been granted its own distinctive
appellation. Some of the finest names in Napa Valley winemaking call Oakville
home. Groth's 121 acre Oakville Estate was originally planted in 1972. Here Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot thrive. Groth's Yountville Estate is most historic,
in that legendary George Yount reportedly planted the first vineyard in Napa Valley
at this locale. Yountville, too, is soon to become a distinctive appellation.
The Groth Yountville Estate, originally planted in 1975 is 44 acres of Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot which benefits from a cooler, drier microclimate compared
to the warmer, wetter northern valley regions. The Vineyards, of course, are the
heart of winemaking. However, there are other less appreciated factors. In Napa
Valley, nature combined her best elements to enhance winemaking. the Napa River,
transversing the 30 mile long valley, slopes gently from a 380 foot elevation
at Calistoga in the north to sea level when it enters the San Francisco Bay. Combined
with costal fog, and moderate to balmy temperatures the majority of the year,
the valley enjoys numerous microclimates which especially enhance certain varietals.
There are now many distinctive appellations or regions in the valley, each with
a unique climate, soil and topography, each especially suited to produce hallmark
varieties. Groth nurtures each varietal into the finest vintage possible. Because
the vines are superb and both Oakville and Yountville vineyard soils and microclimates
