Take
a trip back in time at Frank Family Vineyards. Built as Larkmead Winery in 1884,
the massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures in wine
country; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is a Point
of Historical Interest in the State of California.
Once owned by wine legend Hans Kornell, the winery secured its reputation with sparkling wines. Five sparkling wines are crafted today: Brut, Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, Reserve, and Rouge. However, Owners Richard Frank and Koerner Rombauer have changed their focus to produce superb still wines.
The winery now produces Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Merlot, and three
distinctly different Cabernet Sauvignons. The highly regarded Reserve Cabernet
Sauvignon, barrel-aged for 30 months, is one of the most sought-after wines
in the valley—the 1999 vintage was lauded a “secret cult cab”
by New York Times and recently fetched 94 points in Wine Enthusiast’s
“Best of the Year Issue”, while the 2000 Chardonnay got a top score
of 90 points in the September 2002 issue.
