Harvesting grapes in the Napa Valley for twenty-five years, Duckhorn Vineyards makes wine from the traditional grape varietals of the Bordeaux region of France. This includes two Sauvignon Blanc bottlings, four diverse, elegant Merlots, and two Cabernet Sauvignons. We craft the wines from grapes sourced at our seven estate vineyards within the Napa Valley as well as from numerous grape growers throughout the appellation.

To ensure the highest level of quality in these bottlings, we have been sourcing fruit from some of the finest sites in the Napa Valley for almost twenty-five years. Beginning in 1988, we embarked on an aggressive vineyard acquisition program that has resulted in the ownership of 187 plantable acres of prime Napa Valley vineyard land. Our estate vineyards are located in alluvial fans of the Napa Valley and on the slopes of Howell Mountain. The shallow topsoil and high water drainage of the alluvial soils force the vine to send roots deep in search of water. The rocks retain the day's heat bringing relief to the vine during cold spring mornings and foggy summer nights. Because of its topography, soils, and climate, Howell Mountain has distinctly different grape-growing conditions than does the valley floor. Often during the summer months, the maritime fog seeping into the Napa Valley below will not reach the mountaintop. While this blesses the mountain with temperatures that are more moderate and more hours of sun, the vines must struggle to survive in harsh volcanic soils of gravel and clay. With grapes coming from our own vineyard properties, we enjoy a greater amount of control over the amount and quality of crop produced. With our own vineyards we can also harvest the grapes when we want, even going through some vineyard sites several times, picking only the ripe fruit with each pass. The grapes are both hand-harvested and hand sorted prior to crushing. The resulting wines combine grapes from diverse Napa Valley sub-appellations including Howell Mountain, Carneros, Yountville, Rutherford and St. Helena.

It is our intention over the next several years to elevate the estate vineyard holdings to approximately 75% of total fruit sourced by the winery. This commitment to vineyard ownership marks our dedication to becoming an "Estate Grown" winery.
