Bartholomew Park Winery is dedicated to the expression
of small, single-vineyard sites, producing limited quantities of Cabernet-family
blends. The focus is on the mesoclimates of the western face of the Mayacamas
mountains, a region challenging the preeminence of Bordeaux with complex, distinctive
wines worthy of cellaring.
Six partner vineyards and the Bartholomew Park Estate vineyard comprise this
exploration, offering us a range of elevations from 100 to 1,000 feet and soil
types from fine sandy clay-loam to granitic hard-pack. Each vineyard is uniquely
expressive, contributing silky red fruit in one and a pronounced minerality
in another.
Winemaker Linda Trotta works closely with Jim Bundschu, Director of Viticulture
to ensure that handwork in the vineyard and in the cellar translates to a faithful
expression of this ancient alpine range and its benchlands.
This treasure trove of vineyards, several of which are dry-farmed and deliver yields of no more than 3 tons per acre, are vinted in one ton open top fermentors as warranted by the small size of each lot and to coax intensity and a supple texture from the small berries.
Each component from each of the single vineyards is assessed after fermentation to determine which will comprise the lions' share of the final blend for each year. This flexibility allows the vintage to speak, but with a blend that represents the vineyard's full potential from year to year. These blends are intricately assembled from the experience and intuition of the winemaker -a capability that no laboratory can duplicate.
